Got an overdue library book? Pay late fees with canned food

NEWPORT NEWS — The city’s public libraries will let residents pay their fines with canned food starting Monday.

One item is equal to one late fee and all public library branches are participating.

According to the city’s announcement, unopened items including toothpaste, diapers and shampoo are also accepted and items benefits the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. See the nonprofit’s list of most needed nutritional items.

The 2018 annual Can Your Fines event ends Dec. 31 at the following locations:
