HAMPTON — The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank is now accepting donations through Feeding America and the Bank of America’s Give A Meal campaign.
The annual initiative matches donations 2-to-1 up to $1,000, meaning a $10 donation becomes $30 or roughly 120 meals, said Robyn Robertson, chief development officer for the foodbank.
To donate, select the charity and make sure the credit or debit card has a Peninsula zip code. You can access the website here.
Traditionally this season is a very busy time, but after the loss of Farm Fresh and the recent hurricanes, it is not the case.
Farm Fresh donated approximately 1 million pounds of food to the foodbank, the equivalent of more than 833,000 meals, and while other grocery store chains, such as Kroger, have helped in the meantime, Robertson said every month the organization sees a gap in the number of shelf items and fresh produce.
“I found out our inventory is down 13.37 percent from last year at this time,” Robertson wrote in an email.
She said that foodbank accepts food donations, they really need volunteers and cash.
“We can always stretch a dollar,” she said, adding “$1 can provide four meals.”
“We can’t split up a container of peanut butter,” she said.
