Newport News Shipbuilding recently received the National Business of the Year award at the annual National Association of State Workforce Agencies Workforce Summit & UI Director’s Conference in Birmingham, Alabama.
The shipbuilding company is a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries and is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, according to the company’s website.
“We are honored to be recognized for our workforce development efforts,” said Susan Jacobs, NNS vice president of human resources and administration.
The NASWA is a government organization that provides a variety of services to local, state and federal agencies nationwide, including unemployment insurance and policy expertise.
The annual workforce event was combined with user interface (UI) topics to bring a “more robust, diversified and well-rounded conservation to the conference” and honored the shipbuilding company for its workforce development programs, such as employee training and development, and community outreach and recruitment efforts for prospective employees, according to the shipbuilding company announcement.
The governor also had a few words to say about the award.
“I’m delighted to see Newport News Shipbuilding receive this national recognition, and I congratulate the company on this well-deserved accolade,” Gov. Ralph Northam said.
