NEWPORT NEWS — Peninsula Task Force on Aging in partnership with Peninsula Agency on Aging, will be hosting the second Annual Peninsula Legislative Summit on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Mary Immaculate Hospital Community Education Center.
The forum will focus on several senior citizen concerns such as housing, health care, transportation and caregiving to name just a few, according to a news release from the Peninsula Task Force on Aging.
They say the number of Americans ages 65 and older is projected to more than double from 46 million today to more than 98 million by 2060, and the 65-and-older age group’s share of the total population will rise to nearly 24 percent from 15 percent.
At the Peninsula legislative summit, local, state and federal political leaders and their constituents will come together to discuss the significant rise in the older adults population and the issues affecting them as they age.
This year, approximately 15 legislators and leaders and more than 100 residents, nonprofit leaders, and professionals are registered to attend the session to meet their governmental representatives and learn about issues impacting them.
“By giving legislators and their constituents a forum to exchange information, Peninsula Task Force on Aging is able to bring awareness to the issues and help foster new policy options that help these residents,” said Marcella Williams, Peninsula Task Force on Aging Board chairwoman.
The event is free and open to the public but registration is required.
Senior citizens are encouraged to ask questions and voice concerns they may have about senior issues.
