HAMPTON — Phone scams are still making their way through the peninsula, now residents in Hampton are being targeted by these con artists.
The city’s Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an “aggressive phone scam targeting Hampton and surrounding citizens.”
According to the Sheriff’s Office, “the caller falsely identifies himself as Sergeant Sullivan of the Hampton Sheriff’s Department and is insistent that there are warrants out for his victim’s arrest because of a missed jury date. To avoid arrest they request immediate payment with the purchase of money cards to pay fines in excess of $1,000. They have even made pleas to meet victims personally … to finalize the transaction and satisfy the arrest warrant.”
It’s all a scam, sheriff’s officials said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the collection of fines will never be requested over the phone.
They say that if you get a call like this to not give out any information and never meet anyone seeking to collect funds to avoid arrest.
