NEWPORT NEWS — The city’s efforts in refining energy usage, water usage and waste generation were recognized by the state.
For the sixth straight year, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality awarded the city with its Virginia Environmental Excellence Program Sustainability Partner honor.
The award specifically honored Newport News for switching its fleet of city owned vehicles to an alternative fuel source, including natural gas and propane.
The award also honored the city’s public works department — public works provided cart stickers for residents that can be applied to the outside of city-issued recycling containers or personal interior recycling containers, to help all household members identify which items are recyclable in the residential recycling program, according to a news release from the city.
