NEWPORT NEWS — A fixture in the southeast portion of this city is getting some new digs, thanks to state aid.
Seafood Industrial Park was awarded a $332,016 grant from the Virginia Port Authority’s Aid to Local Ports grant program.
The Aid to Local Ports grant is a state program to promote and enhance facilities that support commercial marine activities across Virginia, according to a news release from the city .
The money will be used to modify moorings and concrete to accommodate a larger vessel, which according to the city will result in significant job creation and tax revenue.
Moorings are the ropes and chains that keep a boat in place.
The refurbishment is part of the East Bulkhead-Boatyard Project, an initiative to increase capacity and address normal wear and tear to the southern entrance of the park.
Construction is scheduled to begin this summer.
