NEWPORT NEWS — A woman from a small town in New Jersey is trying to share her health practices with Hampton Roads.
Jenneane William, founder of Mother Earth Herbal Apothecary, previously worked as a business management analyst and experienced an injury on the job that caused her to need multiple medications.
“I had a really bad head injury and it wiped out all of my neurons,” William said. “I basically had the motor functions and vocabulary of a toddler.”
Frustrated with the side effects, she started researching and trying herbal remedies that she attributes to helping improve the recovery of her memory and motor skills, according to a news release from the city.
“I decided to go off pharmaceuticals and use my own remedies,” William said.
Two years ago, William used her experiences and opened Mother Earth Herbal Apothecary.
Mother Earth specializes in alternative healing methods and sells everything from chakras to teas to incenses.
The business also offers herbal cleansing and reiki sessions. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing through massages.
In addition, the three-room business on Warwick Boulevard offers free classes that focus on teaching people how to be proactive in their health and change the quality of their life.
“The most valuable lesson that I keep with me everyday is the amount of the people in our society that hide the things that they’re going through,” William said. “It’s unbelievable to me to think of the depression, anxiety and struggles people are going through but yet we walk past each other smiling.”
William said her vision for her business is continued expansion. She hopes the methods Mother Earth has championed will continue to help those in need.
Mother Earth Herbal Apothecary also offers all of its services free to cancer patients who are currently receiving treatments, and to individuals preparing to undergo organ transplants.
