NEWPORT NEWS — The Christopher Newport University ballroom is situated in the university’s student union, however, the space will be used for a different audience on Sunday.

The Peninsula Agency on Aging is hosting its third annual Adult Senior Prom from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.

The Peninsula Agency on Aging is part of a national nonprofit, which helps older adults age in a place of their choosing. The organization also provides services including home-delivered meals, medical transportation, adult day care and in-home care for seniors, according to their website.

The Adult Senior Prom is part of Older Americans Month, which takes play every May.

“All area Agency on Aging organizations do events during the month of May in commemoration of Older Americans Month,” said Randi Chew, organizer of the prom and Peninsula Agency on Aging director of development.

Chew said the agency came up with a prom because most high schools also have their prom during the month of May and thought it would be a fun way to engage with the community.

Older Americans Month is a federal initiative, which promotes mental and physical wellness, the elderly offering their wisdom and experience to the next generation and the younger generation seeking the mentorship of someone with more life experience than themselves, according to its website.

Despite being geared toward seniors, Chew said she has seen people as young as 23 come to the prom.

“There’s a wide range of people,” Chew said.

The response from the community has been positive as they’ve sold out the last two years and had to move to the CNU ballroom, which can hold about 300 people.

The theme for this year’s adult senior prom is “Old Hollywood.”

Attire is semi-formal and the band Good Shot Judy, which specializes in vocal jazz, will perform.

“The ambiance is a big ballroom. Ladies wear beautiful dresses and men usually wear suits,” Chew said. “It gives everyone a chance to dress up.”

There will also be dinner, dessert, drinks, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle with all the proceeds going to the Peninsula Agency on Aging.

Tickets are $30. For information or to buy tickets, click here or call 757-933-2618.
