HAMPTON — Tax season is just concluding but two local accountants are hoping to shine a light on how the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act affects the everyday person.

PBMares employees, Michael Mendelsohn and Kasey Pittman will host a seminar entitled “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act: Impacting Individuals and Businesses throughout Hampton Roads” from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. on April 24 at the Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s Lakefront Plaza.

Light refreshments will be served at 7:30 a.m., the event is free and open to the public but the chamber asks that guests to RSVP by April 20.

“This seminar series aims to educate our clients and communities about the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,” said Mendelsohn, a certified public accountant with PBMares. “The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was the most substantive tax law passed in the last 31 years.  This legislation brings many new opportunities, while removing several others.”

Mendelsohn said the Act, which was approved by Congress in December, will impact individual taxpayers and cause considerable alterations pertaining to dependency, itemized and standard deductions, credits, financing of education, retirement planning, tax brackets and rates, and charitable giving.

Mendelsohn said his goal for the seminar is to educate people so they can do their taxes in the future with the most efficiency.

Mendelsohn holds a master’s in accounting from the College of William and Mary and specializes in tax planning and compliance.

Pittman, a manager with PBMares, is a licensed certified public accountant and graduated from William and Mary with a degree in accounting and from The University of Notre Dame with a masters in accounting.

PBMares will conduct similar seminars through June in Richmond, Harrisonburg, Fredericksburg, Newport News, Baltimore and Fairfax.

After the seminar, Mendelsohn and Pittman will have a question and answer session, where they hope to educate the audience on how individuals and business can use the tax law changes to benefit themselves and their business.
