YORK COUNTY —  York County announced curbside recycling service will resume beginning the week of Jan. 5, and it will be replacing TFC-branded recycling cans the week of Monday, Dec. 8.

The county first announced in October that curbside service would resume after it issued a Notice of Intent to Award for Curbside Trash and Recycling Services to BFI Waste Management Services LLC, doing business as Republic Services of Yorktown.

Curbside service had ended in September after The Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority Board of Directors voted to terminate its curbside recycling contract with Tidewater Fibre Corporation. VPPSA is the regional waste authority.

Some residents have TFC-branded recycling cans from the previous contractor that will need to be replaced before service restarts. The county said it will collect TFC-branded recycling cans and deliver new, York County-branded ones during the week of Monday, Dec. 8.

What Residents Need to Do:

  • If the can has a TFC logo on it, place the recycling can at the curb by 7  a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8
  • Leave the can at the curb all week — pickup may occur any time Monday through Friday
  • Do not place trash or recyclables in the TFC can

Residents already using a York County recycling can — with no TFC logo on it — will not receive a replacement and do not need to take any action.

What’s Next:

  • Curbside recycling resumes the week of Jan. 5
  • A new pickup schedule will be shared with residents prior to the restart
  • Billing will update automatically — no action is needed

“We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as we transition back to curbside recycling,” said County Administrator Mark Bellamy. “This is a big step forward in our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.”
