WILLIAMSBURG — Hampton Roads community members are invited to attend a Free Eviction Expungement and Housing Workshop, hosted by the recently launched Community Law Clinic at William & Mary Law School Saturday, Nov. 8.
The clinic, held in partnership with the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stryker Center.
The CLC provides free legal services to low-income individuals and families across Hampton Roads, with a focus on housing justice.
During the Saturday workshop, the CLC said attorneys and clinical law students will help local tenants remove qualifying evictions from their records and provide renters with information to help them navigate today’s challenging housing market.
The CLC said attendees can meet individually with law students and attorneys to:
- Review past eviction records and determine eligibility for removal from rental histories.
- File petitions to expunge eligible evictions.
- Learn and explore other strategies to improve one’s attractiveness as a tenant.
“Removing eligible evictions from tenants’ rental records improves people’s ability to find stable housing,” said Tyler E. Dougherty, Kriesler Director of William & Mary’s Community Law Clinic. “We’re excited to introduce the Community Law Clinic to the Hampton Roads community as a resource while also giving our students a chance to use their legal training for real impact.”
The Clinic will also screen interested attendees for eligibility for criminal record sealing, the CLC said, as expanded relief may be available with upcoming changes to Virginia’s laws in 2026.
The legal clinic is free and open to the public, with advance registration encouraged but not required. Hampton Roads residents who cannot attend in person may contact the Community Law Clinic to make alternative arrangements.
