NEWPORT NEWS — Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg’s four-decade legacy of impact will be honored on Monday’s World Habitat Day with a commending resolution from the Virginia General Assembly.

Del. Marcia “Cia” Price, who represents Virginia’s 95th House District, will make the presentation to the local affiliate of the international nonprofit at its Newport News ReStore location. The community is invited to attend a short program beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 6.

The resolution, adopted by the General Assembly earlier this year, commends Habitat for “40 years of promoting access to affordable housing and building stronger communities throughout the Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg.”

Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg notes it has built and renovated hundreds of homes, partnering with families, volunteers and donors to make affordable housing possible. Families purchase homes through an affordable mortgage and contribute sweat equity hours by helping to build their own homes and the homes of others — creating stability, pride and community.

“This resolution is a powerful recognition of what has been achieved over the past 40 years — but also a reminder of the work ahead,” said Shauntrice Williams, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. “Every family deserves a decent place to live. As we celebrate this milestone, we also recommit ourselves to building a future where possibilities begin with a home.”

The event kicks off Habitat ReStore’s eighth anniversary sale at Chatham Drive, marking the 2003 opening of the first Newport News ReStore location on Warwick Boulevard, and the public is invited to shop, save and support Habitat’s mission. Habitat ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently-used items to generate enough profits to build more Habitat homes.
