WILLIAMSBURG — Dr. William Hill, a former University of Virginia football player and Indianapolis Colts undrafted free agent, has returned home to Hampton Roads to practice medicine as a sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon.

Hill, who played football and basketball at Lafayette High School, always excelled in science and math classes. Combined with his love of sports, he channeled that energy into a Biology degree from the University of Virginia.

Hill graduated from UVA and was offered a spot at the Indianapolis Colts rookie minicamp, but his professional football career didn’t pan out the way he had hoped. Wanting to continue his involvement in sports, Hill pivoted and began searching for his next opportunity.

“I knew very early on that when athletics as a competitive career was done, I wanted to do something — either physical therapy, sports performance training, sports medicine physician — but my path wasn’t completely clear. I knew that I wanted to work with athletes and stay close to the game of sports, but also work with the body,” Hill said.

After obtaining a Master’s in Public Health from UVA, Hill went on to medical school at Howard University College of Medicine. He completed his residency at Los Angeles General Medical Center.

His learning didn’t stop there, as he also earned a prestigious sports medicine fellowship at Southern California Orthopedic Institute. During his time there, he worked alongside both professional athletes and high school programs.

Hill specializes in regenerative medicine, sports medicine, arthroscopy, joint preservation and restoration, minimally invasive joint replacement and technology-assisted surgery.

When it came time to decide where he was going to practice full-time, he knew he wanted to come back to the area that gave him so much. Hill is now on the staff at Hampton Roads Orthopaedics Spine & Sports Medicine.

“I’m here now to invest back into the community that invested so much into me. Williamsburg is home. I want to provide that high level of care to the athletes and be an example of where sports can take you. Part of me coming back is to show the athletes of tomorrow that yes, you can aspire to be a professional athlete or famous coach, but you can also have these ancillary careers that are just as impactful,” Hill said.

Dr. Hill is currently accepting new patients. More information on him and the entire staff of Hampton Roads Orthopaedics Spine & Sports Medicine can be found at hrosm.com.
