YORK COUNTY — What started as a way to brighten neighborhoods during the COVID-19 pandemic has stuck for a group of women in Yorktown. Meet the Glamour Flocks of Yorktown, a local project by a women’s organization that raises funds for nonprofits in the York County area.

Glamour Flocks, launched during the pandemic, sought a project that would bring smiles to the residents of York County. Susan Voss, a member of the Xi Alpha Phi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, bought 50 plastic flamingos and started flocking neighborhood yards.

“We put it out on Facebook that we would come and flock you, flock a yard, make somebody happy, make somebody smile, and we would give the money to a local charity or food bank,” Voss recalled.

After that first flocking, word spread of the group’s initiative. For $50, the women of the chapter will decorate yards with the plastic birds in honor of any celebration.

“It’s really just designed to bring a smile to someone’s face,” Voss explained.

Voss says that the group has placed the birds to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, cancer survivors, graduations, new babies, career milestones and more.

“We’ve even flocked someone’s yard to celebrate their new fence being built,” Voss said.

The group says it is proud that all the money raised stays local. Since starting the initiative in 2020, the group has raised over $10,000 for local charities. Local beneficiaries have been the York County Food Bank, the Gloucester Food Bank, PAWS and the Peninsula Pet Pantry.

While the group mainly decorates yards in Yorktown and Poquoson, the group also rents out their birds to people in other Hampton Roads areas to decorate yards that the group can’t.

“If we don’t have anybody in that area, I always offer them the birds. I’m happy to have people come and pick up the birds so they can do it themselves,” Voss said.
