JAMES CITY COUNTY — James City County announced it is seeking potential buyers for the James City County Marina.
The county acquired the property, situated on Powhatan Creek, in 2006. Since then, the county has made what it called extensive, targeted investments, including:
- Brought in the popular Billsburg Brewery as a tenant
- The removal of aging dock structures and the installation of new, modern docks with upgraded fueling and pump-out stations
- The creation of environmentally-enhanced shoreline areas
- A comprehensive Master Plan outlining future opportunities for additional boat slips, marine services, a waterfront restaurant and related parking
The county said these investments have laid the groundwork for private sector investment to further develop the Marina into a waterfront destination, and it is looking for a buyer and professional operator who will continue to invest in the property’s infrastructure while honoring its historic context.
“Given the state of the Marina when we purchased the property, it was understandable that there were few commercial operators looking to maintain the property at that time. With the investments the county has made over the years, we view this amenity as a wonderful feature in our community, and potentially one that may be best served for future development by a private organization,” said Assistant County Administrator Jason Purse.
“The county believes now is an appropriate time to gauge interest from private sector investors. Any potential sale would ultimately require approval from the Board of Supervisors,” Purse added.
Following a public procurement process, the county said it has retained CarverCo LLC, a Richmond-based commercial real estate consulting and brokerage firm, to lead the marketing and sale of the property. For more information, call 804-307-2881.
