Photo Gallery: Community Groups Gather to Place Flags on Veteran Graves at Cedar Grove Cemetery

WILLIAMSBURG — Ahead of Memorial Day, community groups and residents joined forces at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Williamsburg to place American flags on every veteran’s gravestone.

According to Bill Brown, Cedar Grove caretaker, over 600 veterans are buried at the cemetery. Those veterans range from patriots of the Civil War to Afghanistan.

“At Cedar Grove Cemetery, we honor our Veterans for Memorial Day with reverence and honor. When I started working at cemetery, we had 4 individuals from Disabled American Veterans Patrick Henry Chapter to put out around 300 flags. It took most of the day, but these people instilled a sense of pride and respect in doing this. Twenty years later, we are fortunate to have the support of local groups, volunteers, families and veterans to continue this duty of remembering the sacrifices that were made by many for us all,” Brown said.

Over 50 groups and community members helped mark the graves ahead of today’s Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m.

“The Williamsburg Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in 1925 and just celebrated our 100th anniversary. We are a service organization devoted to Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism. Today, we are at Cedar Grove Cemetery to honor and remember over 500 veterans who have been interred at this historic location for the upcoming Memorial Day,” Sherril Buckner, Regent of the Williamsburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, shared.

Other ceremonies are also taking place around the historic triangle today. For a list, visit here.
