YORKTOWN — Yorktown’s Brynn Torry recently announced her commitment to compete for Auburn University’s women’s gymnastics team starting with the 2026 season.

After begging her parents nonstop, Torry started gymnastics classes at the age of four, but in those early years, the sport was not what she expected.

“I wanted to do gymnastics really bad. My dad owned a fitness gym, so I would always go in there and play around on the equipment and flip around and just be crazy. My mom made me wait until I was four and I started rec classes and actually wanted to quit at first. In my mind, it wasn’t real gymnastics because we were doing little things with hula hoops and parachutes and not real gymnastics in my mind. My parents made me finish out the classes I had signed up for and I had gotten moved in the gym to a more advanced group of gymnasts and I just loved it from there,” Torry said.

After moving to Yorktown from Roanoke, Torry continued her gymnastics training at World Class Gymnastics. When her competitive gymnastics career began, Torry’s parents told her that if she wanted to stick with the sport, she’d have to put in the work.

“When I started competitive gymnastics, that’s when I really committed to the sport. I was six and I remember my parents sitting me down and having a conversation with me about how competing the sport would make it a lot more serious,” Torry recalls.

As she progressed through levels, Torry eventually found herself competing on the elite gymnastics stage. From competing at the Core Hydration Classic, Winter Cup, and the U.S. National Championships, Torry has even found herself on the podium alongside gymnastics great Simone Biles.

“I’ve looked up to her since I was a little girl. At the 2016 Olympics, I was 9 years old, from then until now, she’s been the biggest thing in the sport. Being able to look up to her my whole gymnastics career and then be able to say that I’ve competed with her, it’s surreal. I can’t even believe I can say those words,” Torry said.

Torry recently returned from the 2025 Winter Cup where she placed 17th in the all around competition.

“My routines that I competed there have been in the works for years. I’ve been working on, especially my bar routine, for years. The amount of work that is put into it is insane. I practice for 30 hours a week right now, we are in the gym that whole time just working, working, working on those routines. It’s a lot of work and dedication and it’s also a lot of strategy to build routines because you have to consider a lot of different things. Just to get ready for Winter Cup was a lot of work,” Torry said.

Knowing she wanted to compete in college, Torry visited the University of Oklahoma, the University of Georgia, Louisiana State University, and Auburn University. When she stepped onto the Auburn campus, she knew that it was her place.

“I’ve wanted to do college gymnastics since I was a little girl. Doing elite gymnastics, it’s not something that everybody can do. You can’t make the goal to be a pro gymnast, the goal is always college gymnastics. Recruiting can be overwhelming at times, but it’s an amazing process. At the end of all of those college visits, I knew Auburn was my home. I’m so happy that I’m committed there,” Torry said.

As she finishes out her final year in club gymnastics, Torry is hopeful to add a state, regional, and national title to her list of accolades.

Torry knows that all eyes will be on her as she gets set to begin her collegiate career. She hopes to be an inspiration to the next generation of gymnasts.

“Gymnastics is hard, it takes a lot out of a person. It takes a lot of hard work, a lot of dedication, and there’s going to be times where you just don’t feel like you can do it. Stick with it, push through all the doubt, because it’s all worth it,” Torry said.
