VIRGINIA BEACH — With winter nearly in the rearview, temperatures warmed up while gas prices cooled down, according to AAA.
This week, gas prices dropped by three cents, bringing the national average to $3.12 per gallon. Gas prices are expected to remain steady as March arrives and routine seasonal maintenance wraps up, AAA said.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased from 8.23 million barrels per day last week to 8.45 million. Total domestic gasoline supply increased from 247.9 million barrels to 248.3 million, while gasoline production decreased last week, averaging 9.2 million barrels per day.
Thursday’s national average for a gallon of gas was $3.12, according to AAA, flat as compared to a month ago and 15 cents less than a year ago.
Locally, the gas price average for the commonwealth Thursday was $2.97 — five cents lower than a week ago and 11 cents lower than a month ago. In Hampton Roads, prices decreased one penny to $2.90, which is 11 cents lower than a month ago and 20 cents lower than a year ago.
