WILLIAMSBURG— The Virginia Library Association (VLA) recognized Williamsburg Regional Library (WRL) Outreach Services Director Eletha Davis with the 2024 Librarian of Color Forum Award and awarded former WRL Director Betsy Fowler an honorary life membership.
The Oct. 14 announcement from WRL explains that the Librarian of Color Forum Award aims to increase the visibility of librarians of color and their work in Virginia libraries. it goes on to explain that Davis is WRL’s longest-serving employee with 40 years of public library experience in the Outreach Services division, which delivers library programs and services to adult care facilities, correctional institutions, preschools, schools, and neighborhoods.
“Eletha Davis is a compassionate and committed leader who has tirelessly served our community for four decades,” said Library Director Sandy Towers. “Her dedication to expanding access to knowledge, technology, and library services has positively impacted countless individuals, ensuring our outreach efforts effectively reach those who need them most.”
Former Library Director Betsy Fowler was also awarded an honorary life membership to VLA for her achievements in public libraries for over 30 years. Upon her retirement, Fowler received recognition for her work in Virginia libraries from the Virginia legislature, which passed House Joint Resolution no. 98 honoring her service. In July 2024, Governor Youngkin appointed Fowler to the Library of Virginia Board.
“As director of WRL and in her previous roles, Betsy’s forward-thinking initiatives and collaborations elevated community engagement and set new benchmarks in library innovation,” said Towers. “The Library of Virginia Board will benefit from her knowledge and experience.”
