JAMES CITY COUNTY — A project to replace the bridge on Route 601 (Hicks Island Road) over Diascund Creek in James City County is now underway, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced.
The existing one-lane, steel girder bridge near the intersection of Routes 601 and 603 (Barnes and Diascund Road) will be replaced with a new, wider one-lane bridge with an improved approach.
James City County’s Bryant Structures Inc. was awarded the $3,397,506 construction contract. Construction began earlier this month.
Motorists should expect daytime, single-lane closures on Route 601 in the area during construction, with flagging operations in place. Property access will be maintained to all existing entrances, VDOT said.
Details about planned closures and detours that may occur can be found online. Completion of the project is expected to be in spring 2025, dependent upon weather conditions.
