WILLIAMSBURG — Planet Fitness Gym will occupy the former space of American Family Fitness at New Town Shops on Main in Williamsburg.
Planet Fitness has leased the 26,357-square foot former space of American Family Fitness, according to a May 17 release from Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer.
The New Town Planet Fitness location is locally-owned and operated by Williamsburg resident Michael Barnes and his family.
Barnes said that New Town is the ideal location for his concept.
“We are planning a late 2022 opening after the completion of a total renovation of the space and while making a significant investment in rebranding this signature location,” Barnes said.
Founded in 1992, Planet Fitness brands itself as a “judgement free zone.”
As of March 31, Planet Fitness had more than 16.2 million members and 2,291 locations in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada, Panama, Mexico and Australia.
Over 90% of Planet Fitness stores are owned and operated by independent businessmen and women.
Planet Fitness will join tenants including Regal Cinemas, Barnes & Noble, Bonefish Grill, Panera, Bath & Body Works, Buffalo Wild Wings and Nautical Dog at New Town, which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary.
