SUFFOLK — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District continues to be ready to respond with materials, equipment, and staffing in place as the Commonwealth of Virginia braced for the first snow event of 2022.
On Jan. 3 at around 6 a.m. VDOT crews mobilized ahead of the winter forecast. Due to the fact that the snowstorm began as rain, VDOT said that crews were unable to pretreat the roads ahead of the snow because the anti-icing materials would be less effective or wash away.
When the snow begins during each storm, crews work in 24-hour operations clearing and treating the interstate and state-maintained roadways as needed. Crews have been on standby to assist with downed trees, branches, and debris.
VDOT says that expected heavy snow rates may lead to slushy conditions as the snow melts. Pavement temperatures will continue to drop throughout the day and could impact rush hour travel.
The Department suggests to motorists to monitor the local forecasts and changing road conditions, and to be prepared to avoid or adjust travel as needed. This is because the cold temperatures after precipitation can lead to hazardous roadways because of the ice.
VDOT will continues to monitor road surfaces as temperatures fall during storms. The crews will treat the road as necessary throughout the winter storm.
If travel is absolutely necessary, VDOT provides the following recommendations:
- Give crews time to treat roads
- Allow plenty of time to reach your destination
- Brake very lightly to keep your tires from slipping on pavement
- Do not pass snowplows
