JAMES CITY COUNTY — The Woman’s Club of Williamsburg-GFWC awarded four scholarships totaling $8,750 to young women graduating this year from local high schools.
According to a May 27 news release from the Woman’s Club of Williamsburg, Elizabeth “Ellie” Chason and Carley Keurajian are each receiving $2,500 from the Club’s 2021 Betty Jo Parker Scholarship program. Emma Kreis and Sophia Fitzgerald are each receiving $1,875 from The Woman’s Club of Williamsburg-GFWC 2021 Scholarship program.
Ellie Chason, a graduating senior from Lafayette High School and the New Horizons Governor’s School for Science and Technology, plans to attend Vanderbilt University to study computer science and engineering. She is the president of Girls Who Code Club and co-consul (co-president) of the Latin Club. Ellie is also a student researcher at William & Mary’s Blockchain Lab and will hold an internship at Jefferson Lab this summer. She also volunteers for the Arc of Greater Williamsburg.
Carley Keurajian is graduating from Jamestown High School and plans to attend the University of Georgia to study International Affairs and Anthropology. Carley is a member of multiple honor societies and plays varsity soccer. She is active in Young Life and co-chairs the American Red Cross Blood Drive for her high school, all while working part-time.
Emma Kreis is graduating from Warhill High School (WHS) with plans to attend Virginia Tech to study Post-Secondary English Education. Emma is a member of the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society. She participated in the 2021 Science Fair and is in both band and choir at WHS.
Sophia Fitzgerald, a graduate-to-be from Warhill High School, plans to attend Virginia Tech. She is a member of multiple honor societies and is on her school’s varsity swim team. An active in the Girl Scouts for the past 13 years, Sophia has served as troop co-leader and earned the Girl Scouts’ most prestigious awards. She is also a pre-school swim instructor for the YMCA.
According to the news release, the Betty Jo Parker Scholarship is funded by McIvor L. Parker, Jr. in honor of his late wife, Betty Jo, a long-time member of the Woman’s Club of Williamsburg.
The non-profit Woman’s Club of Williamsburg-GFWC awards scholarships to local high school students to assist young women in obtaining higher education that will prepare them to become future leaders.
Students are selected based on academic standing, leadership ability and extracurricular activities. In addition to scholarships, the club provides financial support for other local, national and international humanitarian organizations.
