YORKTOWN — The Watermen’s Museum announced that it will host a full day of historical interpretations at the Gallery at York Hall, 301 Main Street, on Saturday June, 5.
Reenactors will be on hand for a militia muster as it would have happened in 1775. There will also be a colonial fair held throughout the day.
The events are being put on to commemorate the 246th anniversary of Lord Dunbar, the Royal Governor of the Colony of Virginia, escaping to the British warship, H.M.S Fowey, after ordering all of the gunpowder from the Williamsburg magazine. The event took place in 1775, during which tensions were heightened between the British and American colonists in the time leading up to the Revolutionary War.
The all-day event starts at 10 a.m. with craft demonstrations and games. Throughout the day, there will be drill reenactments from militia members as well as a musicians, a reading of Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty” speech, puppet shows and a dance.
The Watermen’s Museum, located at 309 Water Street in Yorktown, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, visit the museum’s website by clicking here or call (757) 887-2641.
