This year as a lot of holiday events have been cancelled and several restrictions are in place, going to look at Christmas lights in a car is a safe way to get in the spirit.
Sam Sansalone dedicates hours each year to helping residents in the area stay up to date about where they can drive around and view holiday lights.
Sansalone is a full time real estate agent with Wainwright Real Estate, but since 2017 he has worked hard outside of his job on creating a color-coded map covering all the best light displays across Hampton Roads.
“I’ve been driving to see lights for 15 years, and I thought how could other people go look if they don’t know where to go,” he said.
The solution was to dedicate his time to driving around and taking tips from the community about what specific homes will be lit up for the holidays.
He figured if there was a way he could put places on a map and help people out it would be cool and “it just exploded” he said.
There are about 200 light displays on the current map and Sansalone encourages anyone who sees a newly lit house to email him at assemblingdreams@gmail.com so the map can be updated.
His hope is this year more people will go out and see lights because so many other holiday traditions are canceled or have limitations.
“My hope was with COVID, this would be a good way to get people out of the house,” Sansalone said.
