The College of William & Mary finalized the in-person commencement ceremony for the Class of 2020.
The new dates are May 14-16, 2021, one weekend before the Class of 2021 will graduate.
“William & Mary is committed to bringing our Class of 2020 graduates and families back to campus for an in-person Commencement Weekend as soon as it is safe for us to do so,” W&M Vice President for Student Affairs and Commencement Committee Chairwoman Ginger Ambler wrote in an email on Sept. 18. “We so look forward to hosting a grand celebration for you, with the joy and the cherished traditions that make W&M Commencement special.”
Ambler said the Class of 2020 will receive an update about the commencement plans by March 1.
“Our final plans will depend on conditions in Virginia, the governor’s current regulations for our region and our spring 2021 academic calendar,” she added.
So why not have a virtual ceremony instead of an in-person ceremony?
The university already did, said W&M spokeswoman Suzanne Clavet.
“A virtual Commencement was held in May (2020) to confer the graduates’ degrees and acknowledge their great accomplishment,” she wrote in an email, linking to the university’s website and announcement.
She also sent a WYDaily reporter a link to the virtual ceremony.
