Colonial Williamsburg Foundation announced Thursday Chowning’s Tavern will open Saturday but other operational closures have been extended to June.
Previously, the foundation closed the Williamsburg Lodge and extended previous closures through May 21.
Colonial Williamsburg hopes to reopen parts of the Historic Area and the Arts Museums in Phase 2 of Gov. Ralph Northam’s plan to reopen.
“We wish we could open all of our doors and welcome everyone to a full Colonial Williamsburg experience but doing so safely requires that we follow a carefully considered plan that includes collaboration with local and regional governments and other key organizations,” Cliff Fleet, president and CEO of Colonial Williamsburg, said in a prepared statement. “Over the next month, we plan to take further steps toward reopening our museums and more of our hospitality facilities.”
“Throughout this process, our principal aim is to protect the health and safety of our employees, guests and the broader community,” he added.
Some facilities like Williamsburg Craft House opened on May 15 and the foundation expects all of the remaining Merchants Square businesses to reopen by June 1, according to the foundation’s news release.
Colonial Williamsburg also plans to open other hospitality venues as needed and call back furloughed employees and those on administrative leave gradually, providing them with safety training, and waive June rent for those living in Colonial Williamsburg housing.
“Extension of the closure into June will not result in any additional employee furloughs,” according to the news release. “All employees will remain on their current status pending the organization’s gradual reopening of select sites.”
