After temporarily closing their coronavirus website for two days, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs unveiled a new site Wednesday to track the positive number of coronavirus cases in veteran hospitals across the nation.
The COVID-19 National Summary now shows the total number of active, convalescent and deaths related to the coronavirus among veterans, employees and civilians.
Convalescent cases are those who have been discharged from the hospital or two weeks has passed since their positive diagnosis while active cases are those who have not died or reached convalescent status
Both active and convalescent cases are categorized as veteran, employee, veteran employee and “all other” which includes Tricare patients, active duty military and other persons.
Deaths are broken down to “inpatient,” where the person with the coronavirus died at the health care facility or “known other,” where the death happened elsewhere.
As of Wednesday, Hampton VA Medical Center had 62 cases with 52 convalescent cases, 7 active cases and three inpatient deaths.
Veterans make up 34 convalescent cases and 5 active cases, employees account for 11 convalescent cases and 1 active case and there are 7 veteran employees considered convalescent and 1 active case.
As of Wednesday morning, Virginia Department of Health was unable to report the latest numbers related to coronavirus data due to a technical issue on the department’s website.
Statewide Tuesday, there are 20,256 positive cases of the coronavirus and 713 deaths, according to the Virginia Department of Health’s website.
James City County has 166 positive cases, Newport News had 133, Hampton has 128, York County has 48, Williamsburg has 27 and Poquoson has 7, according to the Virginia Department of Health’s website.
At least 26 people from the Peninsula Health District and 3 people from the Hampton Heath District have died from the coronavirus.
The Peninsula Health District covers Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County. The Hampton Health District covers Hampton
So far, 49 health care workers within the Peninsula Health District and 21 in Hampton have tested positive.
As of Tuesday, there are a total of 14 outbreaks on the Peninsula — 5 in long-term care facilities, 7 in congregate setting like offices and apartments complexes, 1 in a health care facility and another in an education facility. Hampton has 3 outbreaks: 2 in congregate settings and 1 in a long-term care facility.
