Darius Robertson is facing serious allegations.
Police arrested the 30-year-old James City County man over the weekend after he allegedly hit a dog with a hammer and a meat cleaver.
It was about 1 a.m. on Sunday when officers went to the 4500 block of Cedar Point Lane to see about a complaint called from there, said Stephanie Williams, spokeswoman for James City Police Department.
Officers learned Robertson, who had been drinking, was arguing with the complainant, and it was during that argument that he hit the dog with a hammer, held the dog by its collar and hit the dog with a meat cleaver, Williams wrote in an email.
“The dog suffered deep cut to the rear left side of his back and was bleeding excessively,” Williams said.
Robertson left before police arrived at the scene — the dog was taken to the Animal Clinic and Wellness to be treated overnight, authorities said.
He is charged with felony cruelty to animals, police said.
Robertson was taken to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. He has since been released on $5,000 bond, jail officials said.
