Police find possible mobile meth lab near Merrimac Trail

James City County Police said they may have found a mobile meth lab after a traffic stop Thursday morning.

Deputy Police Chief Steve Rubino said officers pulled over a pickup at around 10 a.m. on the on-ramp from Merrimac Trail and 199 east for an expired registration.

During a conversation with the driver, an officer “found probable cause” to search the vehicle, but Rubino did not elaborate what that probable cause was.

Rubino would only say a search of the vehicle revealed “items consistent with the manufacturing of methamphetamine.”

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police and the York County Fire Department also responded to the scene. The road was closed between 1-2:30 p.m.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether police have anyone detained — Rubino said no arrests have been made as the incident remains under investigation.

Further details about the incident was not immediately released.
