A New Kent man was struck while crossing the street following the Christmas Tree lighting in Toano Saturday night, authorities said.
On Nov. 30 at approximately 6:15 p.m. a 33-year-old man was crossing the road wearing dark clothes in a poorly lit area before he was struck by a 2001 Honda Accord, Stephanie Williams, spokeswoman for the James City County Police Department, said.
The driver, a 63-year-old woman, swerved and “obviously saw him at the last second,” Williams said.
Authorities said the pedestrian was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital and is in critical condition with a broken leg, arm and head injuries.
Williams said two officers were at the Christmas tree lighting directing traffic at two different locations and the New Kent man did not use either crossing.
One of the officers witnessed the incident, Williams added.
No charges have been filed against the driver, she said.
