
Drivers in Hampton Roads can expect closures on water crossings, interstates and notable detours for the week of Dec. 1-7.
This list covers full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges and primary roads, and single-lane closures at the bridge-tunnels and the Berkley, High Rise and James River bridges.
The Virginia Department of Transportation will suspend most highway work zones and lift lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia for Thanksgiving Day travel from noon on Wednesday, Nov. 27 until noon on Monday, Dec. 2.

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64
- Single-lane closure westbound on Dec. 2 – 3, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, I-664
- Single-lane closure southbound on Dec. 2 – 5, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Single-lane closure northbound on Dec. 4 – 5, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Berkley Bridge, I-264
- Single-lane closure westbound on Dec. 2, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-64
I-64 Widening Project, Newport News/York County/James City County
- Single-lane closures on I-64 east and west from Route 199 Lightfoot exit (exit 234) to Route 199/Humelsine Parkway (exit 242) Dec. 5, starting as early as 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Lane closures under flagger control on Lakeshead Drive at the I-64 overpass on Dec. 3, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorist and emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.
- A consecutive, long-term full ramp closure on Route 143 Merrimac Trail north to I-64 west continues. Traffic will follow detour signage in place directing motorists to the Route 143 south on-ramp to I-64 west during the closure. View project page for complete lane closure and detour information.
I-64 Southside Widening, High Rise Bridge Expansion
- Alternating single-lane closures on I-64 in both directions between South Military Highway (exit 297) and Greenbrier Parkway (exit 289):
- Dec. 2-5, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Dec. 6, from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Dec. 7, from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
- Full closure and detour of I-64 east and west near the High Rise Bridge on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 11 p.m. to Monday, Dec. 9, at 4 a.m.
I-64 Express Lanes
- Express lanes will be closed from Dec. 6 at 10 p.m. through Dec. 8 at 11 a.m.
I-264
I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements Project, Norfolk/Virginia Beach
- Double-lane closure of the I-264 east mainline/inside set from I-64 to Newtown Road (exit 15) beginning Dec. 6 at 10 p.m. through Dec. 9 at 5 a.m.
- Full closure of the I-64 east off-ramp (exit 284A) to I-264 east (inside set) beginning Dec. 6 at 10 p.m. through Dec. 9 at 5 a.m.
I-264 Norfolk/Virginia Beach
- I-264 east off-ramp to Route 58/Virginia Beach Boulevard (exit 20) on Dec. 3 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
I-95
- Slow roll full closures on I-95 in both directions between Route 301 (exit 12) and Quarter Moon Road overpass, Dec. 4 – 5, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
