Dentists on the Peninsula are dedicated to protecting the teeth of little trick-or-treaters this Halloween — so much so, they’re willing to pay cash for candy as part of this year’s Halloween Candy Buy Back program.
Dr. Mark Huie’s pediatric dentistry office in Newport News is paying $1 per pound and then they’re matching any amounts paid out for a donation to Operation Smile.
“[Huie] cares about the kids’ teeth but also wants to make it fun to give the candy away knowing they’re helping their teeth and a great cause while also being rewarded,” said Courtney Dye, the marketing director at Huie’s office.
Huie’s practice has participated in the program since about 2009, and in an effort that serves several purposes, has shelled out a total of nearly $3,000 over the years.
Dye said the money comes from Huie himself who also sees the initiative as a way to overcome the negative connotations kids associate with going to the dentist.
“He treats kids’ feelings before he treats their teeth,” she said.
All the candy bought back goes to U.S. troops based in organizations locally with the most totaling 561 pounds back in 2011.
Trick-or-treaters can get paid when they bring their candy by the pound to Huie’s Newport News office at 12725 McManus Blvd. on Nov. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
