The Virginia Department of Transportation is replacing the Route 134 bridge over Brick Kiln Creek on Monday.
The entire project is expected to be complete in spring of 2021.
Route 134 otherwise known as Hampton Highway and Magruder Boulevard is at York County’s border near Hampton and construction will be about a half a mile between Tabb Smith Trail and Route 172, Commander Shepard Boulevard intersection, according to a news release from VDOT.
The $4.5 million construction project will replace the 1930 bridge and add two travel lanes and shoulders as well as relocating the main water line under Brick Kiln Creek.
Motorists can expect to see the right lane closed next week so crews can create another lane to accommodate traffic on Route 134. The bridge closure is expected to end in spring 2020.
“Once the temporary northbound bridge closure begins for demolition and reconstruction, northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to a single lane in each direction on the southbound bridge. A long-term closure will also be in place on North Armistead Avenue at the Magruder Boulevard intersection during this traffic shift; however, access will be maintained for local businesses and residences,” according to VDOT’s announcement.
