Residents near Croaker might be seeing some changes in the future.
On Wednesday, the Virginia Department of Transportation and James City County had a public hearing on the proposed plans to widen Croaker Road.
The project is designed to improve safety and capacity by widening the road between Richmond Road and Point O’ Woods Road as well as creating a shared-use path and intersection improvements along the corridor, according to a news release from the county.
Proposed improvements include:
- Widening of the roadway from two lanes to four lanes with a raised median.
- Dedicated right turn lanes at all intersections.
- Dedicated left turn lanes at all median crossovers.
- A continuous shared-use path on the west side of Croaker Road, between Richmond Road and Rose Lane.
- Pedestrian crosswalks.
- Bridge widening to accommodate the new roadway geometry.
According to the VDOT website, widening the roadway and the addition of the paths and crosswalks will aid metropolitan connectivity with pedestrians and bikeways in a growing residential area.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $18.6 million and the construction contract is expected to be awarded in 2024.
During the time of construction, access to all properties and traffic in both directions will be maintained.
Additionally, as the project is planned there may be additional easements for utility relocation that are required beyond the proposed right-of-way shown on the public hearing plan.
During the right of way acquisition process and prior to construction, property owners will be informed of the exact location of the easements.
The public hearing on Wednesday was to hear comments from residents and provide a review to locals. Public comment period for the project will close on Oct. 5. Comments provided before that time will be taken into consideration when planning the project.
