Drivers on Interstate 64 should expect a series of nightly lane closures — and possibly some delays — through the week. As a result of VDOT’s I-64 widening project certain ramps and lanes will experience closures from June 30 to July 6.

*VDOT will lift most lane closures for holiday travel from noon Wednesday, July 3 until noon Friday, July 5.

While the lane closure lift is in effect for most areas, motorists may encounter semi-permanent work zones that remain in place during that time. A full listing of those lane closures can be found on VDOT’s website.

Ramps

• A consecutive, long-term full ramp closure on Route 143 Merrimac Trail north to I-64 west continues. Traffic will follow detour signage in place directing motorists to the Route 143 south on-ramp to I-64 west during the closure.

Lanes

• Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64: Single-lane closure eastbound, June 30, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• James River Bridge, Route 17: Alternating single-lane closures in both directions, July 1-2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Daytime lane closure under flagger control on Rochambeau Drive at Bruton High School on July 1-3 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Motorist and emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.
• Alternating single-lane closures on I-64 east and west from Route 199 Lightfoot exit (exit 234) to Route 199/Humelsine Parkway (exit 242):
  • July 1-2, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. westbound
  • July 1-2, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. eastbound
• 64 Express Lanes closed:
  • June 29, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • July 1, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m

• I-64/I-264/I-564 HOV Diamond Lanes and 64 Express Lanes: HOV restrictions and express lanes tolls are lifted on Thursday, July 4, and HOV restrictions are not enforced on Sundays.
• The 64 Express Lanes in Norfolk are free and open to motorists outside of normal operating hours, including Sundays.*
• I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel: Local traffic to Virginia Beach is encouraged to use the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternative to the HRBT. If traveling to Virginia Beach, take I-664 south to the MMMBT. Then take the Portsmouth/Norfolk exit (exit 15A) to I-264 east to Virginia Beach.*

  • If you plan to drink, have a designated driver
  • Buckle up
  • Keep your eyes on the road
  • Take a break if you are drowsy
  • Don’t drive distracted, and speak up if someone else is doing so
