Virginians in Hampton Roads are in for a hot, sunny Memorial Day weekend.
Temperatures are set to reach the upper 80s and low 90s this weekend, with Sunday being the hottest of the three-day stretch, said Ryan Rogers, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wakefield.
Despite the heat, humidity “doesn’t look as bad as it could be,” meaning the dew point won’t be high enough to drive the heat index up to dangerous temperatures.
“Not terrible for a holiday weekend,” Rogers said. “If this were happening in July, things could be quite a bit worse.”
Rogers said some isolated showers could potentially pop up because of the heat, but the weekend is expected to be mostly sunny.
An easterly breeze can also bring in some cooler air from the water during this time of year. The breeze will come from the southeast and offer some relief from the heat Saturday, but will shift to the west Sunday.
Sunday is forecast to be the hottest of all three days this holiday weekend.
Saturday’s southeasterly breeze will be most effective near the beach, but Rogers said it will help cool down the Williamsburg area as well.
Rogers said the UV index will be “very high” this weekend because of the clear skies and the time of year. In other words: Wear sunscreen.
After Memorial Day, temperatures will continue to rise, peaking around 94 degrees in eastern Virginia Wednesday.
