York County parents can keep an eye out in coming years for possible changes to the preschool program in the district.
During the district’s school board meeting on May 13, Carl James, chief operations officer for the district, presented information to the board regarding the possibility of moving all of the area’s preschool programs to one central location, said Katherine Goff, spokeswoman for the district.
Currently, there are preschool programs at each elementary school within the district, with varying levels, ages, and class sizes.
“[York County School District] continuously evaluates our programs and processes for opportunities for improvement in efficiencies and delivery of instructional services,” Goff said. “The concept of the preschool center is part of that continuous evaluation.”
Goff said the concept is still in the very early stages and a formal proposal has not yet been made to the district. The purpose of the presentation at the meeting was to inform the board of the discussions surrounding the preschool classes.
Moving the classes into one central unit would be to create instructional benefit, Goff said. Goff did not comment on the specific benefits, saying giving out specific information might lead to inaccuracies since the concept is still in the preliminary stages.
If the concept were to go further, Goff said the next step would be for district staff to form a proposal for the board’s consideration. There is currently no timeline for creating the proposal, however.
