At 14, Maria Wood would come home from school and spend her days helping her parents with their nail salon business.
Now, she co-owns two nail salons with her husband of six years, Emanuel Wood.
“He married into it,” said Maria, who handles the nail polish and brow studio, while her husband takes care of the administrative side of the business.
Nail Addict opened Friday morning in the shopping center off Longhill Road adjacent to Old Towne Pharmacy and Joan’s Antiques, Consignment and More and is the second location of the nail salon, the first being in Newport News.
“We kind of just fell into this,” Emanuel Wood said. “Initially we wanted to do a brow studio.”
The couple said they invested $30,000 after James City County passed all of their business permits to open a brow studio.
However, because of zoning laws the Woods found out they could not open a brow studio unless they moved elsewhere. Instead, they decided to open another nail salon, which meant an additional $15,000 investment.
“We were supposed to open Jan. 1 and we were delayed two months,” Maria Wood said.
According to the nail salon’s social media pages, the Nail Addict location will only offer gel manicures, not regular manicures and all customers get 10 percent off their purchases until the end of the month.
Emanuel Wood said all of the nail technicians are licensed and the business stocks high quality nail polish.
“She (Maria) is extremely passionate about nails and providing a superior beauty experience,” he said.
