NEWPORT NEWS — Construction on the new Service Center for Operations and Transportation for the city’s public schools is underway, with construction expected to be completed this summer.
“The existing SCOT center will be demolished as a part of the construction,” Larry Dryden, project manager, wrote in an email.
The old SCOT center, which starts at the intersection of Rattley Road and Hogan Drive, has a plant services building, child nutrition building, gas pumps and a parking lot. The center is down the street from Tech Center and adjacent to Jefferson Lab.
The entire project costs $38.8 million and the city will use bonds to pay for it.
According to the city’s announcement, the new SCOT center, 12571 Patrick Henry Drive will have new amenities such as a new mailroom and print room and features a fuel island and parking for buses, fleet vehicles and privately owned vehicles.
The purpose of the new facility is to consolidate school services and make land available to Jefferson Labs for possible future projects.
In February of last year, City Council approved the 2014 unsolicited proposal from W.J. Jordan Development, whose subsidiary, Air Jordan LLC. recently announced a $3 million dollar corporate hanger at Newport News/ Williamsburg International Airport.
It is unclear why the school district or Jefferson Lab is not contributing money towards the new facility.
