As Election Day rounds the corner, now is the time to start preparing to cast your vote.
Although the ballots in the Historic Triangle are fairly short this year, WYDaily staff wanted to ensure residents know what’s on the ballot, as well as where and when to vote on Nov. 6.
Polling places will open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Voters already waiting in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.
To find a local polling place, the Virginia Department of Elections has provided a tool to look up polling places, voter registration information, candidate lists and voter history.
Registered voters will need to prove their identity with acceptable photo identification as required by law such as a valid Virginia Driver’s License or ID card, a valid DMV issued veteran’s ID card, a valid United States passport or a valid college or university student photo ID card from an institution of higher education located in Virginia.

The last day to register to vote was Oct. 15.
The final day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail is Oct. 30 by 5 p.m. The last opportunity to get an absentee ballot in-person is 5 p.m. Nov. 3.
Here’s who’s on the ballot:
Residents in Williamsburg, James City County and York County will vote in the United State Senate race. Those candidates include:
- Timothy Kaine, Democrat (Incumbent)
- Matt Waters, Libertarian
- Corey Stewart, Republican
Some areas of the Historic Triangle will be voting in the 2nd Congressional District race for the House of Representatives. Candidates in that race include:
- Scott Taylor, Republican (Incumbent)
- Elaine Luria, Democrat
In other parts of James City County, voters will cast their ballots in the 1st Congressional District House of Representatives race. Those candidates are:
- Robert “Rob” Wittman, Republican (Incumbent)
- Vangie Williams, Democrat
In York County, voters will also vote for their treasurer, which comes on the heels of former Treasurer Deborah Robinson’s retirement earlier this year. Those candidates include:
- David Westcott, Republican
- Candice Kelley, Independent (Interim)
Two constitutional amendments are also under consideration. Here’s how each question will appear on the ballot:
“Proposed Constitutional Amendment Question 1: Should a county, city, or town be authorized to provide a partial tax exemption for real property that is subject to recurrent flooding, if flooding resiliency improvements have been made on the property?”
“Proposed Constitutional Amendment Question 2: Shall the real property tax exemption for a primary residence that is currently provided to the surviving spouses of veterans who had a one hundred percent service-connected, permanent, and total disability be amended to allow the surviving spouse to move to a different primary residence and still claim the exemption?”
