A triathlon will affect traffic in James City County this weekend. Here’s where

A triathlon may cause delays along Route 5 in James City County this weekend.

The REV3 Triathlon is scheduled to affect traffic on Route 5 near Chickahominy Riverfront Park from 5 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, and 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, James City County said in a news release.

The sprint triathlon and kids’ duathlon will be held Saturday, and the Olympic and half-triathlon events will be on Sunday.

Besides traffic on Route 5, the triathlon events will also affect patrons at Chickahominy Riverfront Park, but the park, swimming pool and splash pad will stay open most of the weekend, with a few exceptions.

The swimming portion of the event will be held from Gordon Creek to the Chickahominy River and will affect those boating and fishing. The fishing pier will be closed to the public from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

On Sunday, the fishing pier, boat ramp and paddlecraft rentals will also be closed.

Those looking for other ways out on the water can use the following ramps:

  • Brickyard Landing, 990 Brickyard Road.
  • Diascund Reservoir Park (electric motors only), 9551 Diascund Reservoir Park Road.
  • Little Creek Reservoir Park (electric motors only).
  • James City County Marina (some restrictions apply due to the Colonial Parkway), 2054 Jamestown Road.
  • Kayaks, canoes and other small boats may launched at all boat ramps as well as Powhatan Creek Park, the James City County Marina and Jamestown Beach Event Park.

The bicycle and running portions of the races will start the Chickahominy Riverfront Park and cross the Judith Stewart Dresser Bridge into Charles City County. The Virginia Capital Trail will also be used for some of the triathlon. which may cause traffic delays during the sprint event on Saturday, the county said.

The run portion will not cause delays Sunday.

Police will direct traffic during the race to help avoid traffic delays.

“Bicyclists will be traveling on the roadway throughout the morning, so drivers should use caution,” the release said.
