YORK — A Virginia State Police trooper suffered minor injuries Friday when a truck slammed into the back of his cruiser during a traffic stop on Interstate 64 in York County.

The accident happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. as the trooper attempted to pull over a speeding sedan near the Route 199 exit on westbound I-64, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya of Virginia State Police.

The sedan’s driver suddenly stopped in the left lane of the interstate, causing the trooper to abruptly slow down to avoid hitting the vehicle. A pickup then struck the trooper’s cruiser from behind, causing the trooper’s car to push the sedan into the guardrail, Anaya said.

The trooper and the other two drivers involved in the collision were treated for minor injuries at the scene, Anaya said.

Police identified the driver of the pickup as Steven Todd Perkins, 51. He was charged with following too closely and driving on a suspended license.

The other driver was identified as Kanishia Aurdray Collins, 22. He was charged with improper stopping.
