Update: Emily’s Donuts and Cafe is sold out of doughnuts as of 12:30 p.m. Friday.
National Doughnut Day is Friday (June 1), and doughnut shops across Williamsburg are celebrating with free pastries.
Since 1938, doughnut lovers have been spreading their love for the treat with National Doughnut Day every first Friday in June. Now, local shops are participating in the fun as well.
Duck Donuts, 4655 Monticello Ave., will be giving away free doughnuts, with no purchase necessary. Guests can choose between a bare doughnut, which is straight from the fryer; a powdered-sugar doughnut; or a cinnamon sugar doughnut.
Emily’s Donuts and Cafe, 7123 Merrimac Trail, will also be giving away a free glazed doughnut to any customer, with no purchase necessary.
The national chain Dunkin’ Donuts is joining in on the fun too. Locations throughout the Williamsburg area will be giving away a free doughnut with the purchase of any drink. Free doughnuts are limited to only the 18 classic styles, which include the Boston cream and the traditional jelly doughnut.
For those that want to celebrate but don’t want to calories, Edible Arrangements is launching their new “donutibles,” which is a Granny Smith apple shaped like a doughnut and dipped in chocolate. The shop at 4655 Monticello Ave. just started making these new treats starting this week, but they are set to remain on the menu after National Doughnut Day, said to Kevin Younger, assistant manager.
National Doughnut Day only comes once a year, so make sure to start the weekend with some fried dough.
