NORFOLK — A Norfolk Police Department officer saved a man from Knitting Mill Creek on Friday morning.

NPD officers Tyler McElroy, Ryan Shepherd and Michael Torian were called to Colonial Place around 11:40 a.m. because a man was floating on his back in the water about 10 feet from shore, according to the NPD.

Although medics threw the man a life ring, he didn’t respond. McElroy jumped into the cold water, and brought the man to shore. Shepherd, Torian and Norfolk Fire Department Firefighter Kevin Harmon pulled the man out of the water, and he was taken to Norfolk General Hospital to be treated for hypothermia, according to the NPD.

The man is in his 60s, and police do not know why he was in the water. They described his demeanor as “confused.”

“We knew he was in trouble, so we did what we had to do,” McElroy said. “It was cold. You didn’t really think about how cold it was until afterwards.”
