George Washington gets older every year, but in 2018 his Williamsburg fans can celebrate the 286th birthday of America’s first president in a new way.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, the George Washington Society of Virginia will hold its inaugural meeting at 6 p.m. at Josiah Chowning’s Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg, according to a release from the society.

“What more perfect location, than the Historic Triangle, to establish the George Washington Society of Virginia?” Dr. Chip Zimmer, the group’s founder, said in the release. “Washington’s ties to the region are legendary.”

The event will feature historian Tony Williams, who will talk about Washington’s greatness. Williams holds history degrees from both Syracuse University and Ohio State University. In addition, Williams is the program director at the Washington, Jefferson & Madison Institute in Charlottesville.

The society is planning two to three events each year, including a field trip, a Christmas ball and a Washington’s birthday bash.

Meetings will be on the third Tuesday of every month, beginning in March, at 6:30 p.m. at Eight Shires Coloniale Distillery in Williamsburg.

The mission of the George Washington Society of Virginia is to preserve and promote the memory of the nation’s first president and educate people about his virtue, leadership, vision and faith, according to the release.

Reservations are required to attend the birthday celebration and may be made by sending a email to Karen McPherson at [email protected].
