The Virginia Department of Transportation is urging Hampton Roads residents to drive with caution as temperatures drop below freezing Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures to drop into the teens and lower 20s overnight in the entire region, according to a 3:30 p.m. update from the NWS.

Although VDOT has spent most of the afternoon treating interstates and roadways with salt and abrasives, snow melted by warmer daytime temperatures Wednesday will likely refreeze, according to a news release.

In snowy or icy conditions, VDOT recommends drivers lower their speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and allow plenty of time to reach their destination.

Drivers should also give the right of way to slow-moving equipment such as snowplows.
