Virginia’s new year gas prices are more expensive than they have been in four years.
As of Jan. 3, gas prices in Virginia are averaging at $2.29 a gallon, which is four cents more expensive than they were last week and seven cents more expensive than January 2016, according to a AAA news release.
At $2.27 a gallon on average, gas costs two cents less in Hampton Roads than the rest of the state; however, that price is seven cents more expensive than last week and seven cents higher than January 2016.
The state hasn’t seen prices this high in early January since 2014 when gas was about $3 a gallon. Still, buying gas in Virginia is still about 20 cents cheaper than the rest of the country where the price for fuel is averaging $2.49 per gallon, according to AAA.
Gas prices typically get raise during the holidays when there’s a higher demand for fuel. They are expected to drop over the next few months.
