NORFOLK — A commuter using an EZ-Pass to travel through the Downtown or Midtown tunnels to get to and from work could pay more than $1,050 in tolls next year.
Toll costs for the Downtown and Midtown tunnels will increase on Jan. 1, bringing the total cost during peak hours to more than $2 for EZ-Pass drivers, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation news release.
The pockets of registered and unregistered pay-by-plate drivers will be hurting even worse. Registered accounts will be charged an additional 21 cents during peak hours. Unregistered drivers — who already pay $5.25 cents at that time — will be charged an extra 28 cents during peak hours, the release states.
An EZ-Pass commuter who travels the tunnels twice a day during peak hours should expect to pay $1,086 in tolls next year — and that’s the cheapest option.

Tunnel drivers traveling outside of peak hours will also have to pay a steeper price with rates increasing to more than $5 for unregistered pay-by-plate drivers, according to the release.
It’s even more expensive to drive a heavy vehicle — including a car with a trailer attached to it. Heavy vehicle rates are rising to more than $8 for EZ-Pass drivers and $10 for registered pay-by-plate travelers during peak hours. Those who are unregistered are already paying more than $11 per tunnel trip, but will be charged an additional 68 cents per peak-hour trip.
